...So now?

[Delta's voice in the background.]

Okay. Uh, hi. This is Theta. I'm not there right now, so leave a message and I'll reply when I get it. ...Bye.

Personality: Theta is quite possibly one of the sunniest people you will ever meet. He always seems to be smiling, is easily excited and can lighten the mood of the room he's in just by being in it. People might say he's the typical bouncy child, but there's more to it than just childish energy. Theta genuinely enjoys life, wants to try new things, have fun and make the most of it and is always finding little ways to help make other people's days just that much brighter. While he is often shy around strangers, sometimes he'll just click with a person. He loves seeing other people smile, so why not be the one to cause that smile?

Unfortunately, not even Theta can always be happy, and the quickest way to bring his mood down is through fighting. Not fighting between enemies though, no, he's been accidentally caught in a couple of shootouts and kept his calm throughout. But when friends or family begin arguing amongst themselves, that's what he can't stand. You'll rarely find Theta in the same room as an arguing pair, or if he is there, he's likely curled up and shaking in a corner with his hands over his ears or with his hearing aids out if it's really bad. He's been known to leave the table at meals or hide somewhere in the house when his older brothers start going at one another and it often takes one of them to come and find him to bring him back out after it's over.

Theta's hearing impairment made it harder for him to learn to speak, but he's had good encouragement from both his siblings and speech counselors and now at eleven, he can speak almost as well as any other kid his age and will cheerfully babble about his day at school or latest skateboard trick, sometimes signing as he speaks. Though he can comfortably hold a conversation with people he knows, he's pretty quiet around strangers. This is partly to do with his natural shyness and partly to do with the fact that when he meets strangers, it's usually in a crowded area and the elevated background noise makes it harder for him to hear what's being said to him.

Theta may be young, but he's not stupid. On the contrary, he's usually very good at seeing what's going on around him and thinks quite deeply about a lot of things. He's just beginning to understand how much his older brothers have sacrificed for the sake of himself and the younger siblings and is consequently trying to make their job a bit easier. However, although he means well, he doesn't always go about things in the right way and will either misjudge the reaction to what he's trying to do, or accidentally make the situation worse. Following an incident involving a leaky tap and ending in the flooding of the bathroom, Theta's trying to think more carefully about what he does before he does it.

Back story: Theta is the third youngest member of the Ai family and the first to have been brought in and raised after Alpha disappeared. He doesn't understand the implications or significance of that, not knowing anything about Alpha except for hushed whispers between his older brothers when they think he's gone to bed, but he loves his brothers and looks up to them for just about everything.

Theta arrived at the Ai household with moderately severe hearing loss in both ears. It was picked up quickly and he was fitted with his first hearing aids when he was seven months old. Upon hearing his older brothers' voices for the first time, he didn't stop grinning and giggling for a good three days. As he got to the age where kids learn to speak, he faced a challenge, but was helped through it by his siblings and teachers once he started school. He started to learn sign language just in case something happened to his aids and he took to the silent speech just as quickly as he had to vocal speech. His current aids are purple at his insistence, and he also has mods built into his helmet which provide additional assistance when he's wearing it and is especially useful in more crowded areas.

Though he was still young when Eta and Iota arrived, he remembers being pleased that he wasn't the youngest anymore and promising to help look after the twins just as he had been looked after. He accepted them immediately and would spend hours playing with them before they could even crawl.

Theta has had as normal a childhood as it was possible for his brothers to give him. He's doing pretty well in school and has a few good friends who managed to get through his uncertainty around new people and get to know him. These friends are also very supportive when it comes to the few who bully him over his hearing aids, to which he is eternally grateful. Skateboarding has been his main hobby for the past couple of years and he's getting rather good, much to his joy, and can often be found at the park where there's a few ramps set up for him and others to practice and have fun on. He tries hard, both at school and at skateboarding, and the results show it.

Sample: There's few things as good as the rush of wind and sense of speed when Theta is allowed out to the skate park near home. It's also one of the few times he resents the necessity of helmets as he wants nothing more than to take his off and feel the wind against his face and combing through his hair. But he promised Delta that he'd be careful and the helmet also doubles as protection in case he falls off.

Not that he will. He hasn't fallen off for months unless he's attempting a new trick and today he's just having fun with what he already knows.

With a whoop, he jumps off the pipe and turns to go up the ramp. The board flips as he sails over the top, landing with a thump, right side up and he barely wobbles as he regains his balance.

It's starting to get dark, he should probably start heading home. Without stopping, he guides the board out of the skating area and out onto the path that runs through the park. By now, he knows the way home in the dark, though he knows not to stay out so long as to prove it. In the dwindling light, there aren't many people still out so Theta has a pretty clear run to speed up as he winds down the path. Soon, he reaches the edge of the park and leans out to direct the board down the street until he hops off and picks the board up to walk up the path to the familiar house he calls home.
